Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid: Mbappé's 100th Madrid goal wins El Clásico and ends Barça's perfect start

José Mourinho came back to Camp Nou and left with exactly what he wanted. Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid won 2-1, ending Barcelona's run of nine straight LaLiga wins and blowing the title race open.

How it happened

Minute Event
41' Mbappé 0-1 — Yan Diomande's low cross is cleared by Gerard Martín straight into Mbappé and over the line
61' Raphinha 1-1 — a quick corner, Pedri's pass and a low finish across goal
66' Andriy Lunin saves Gerard Martín's header
87' Mbappé 1-2 — substitute Eduardo Camavinga sets him up and he finishes into an empty net

Lamine Yamal missed a close-range chance just before Madrid's opener, and Barcelona had 59% of the ball in the first half. But Madrid defended well and took their chances.

Mbappé's milestone

The winner was Mbappé's 100th goal for Real Madrid. He now has 11 LaLiga goals in 10 games — the night before the Ballon d'Or ceremony, where he is one of the contenders.

Mourinho: "We play to win the league"

Mourinho's post-match press conference was vintage. "Real Madrid play to win the league, not to win at Camp Nou," he said. "This is a great win, but when we get back to work, I'm not going to let anyone have their head in the clouds."

He admitted the stakes: "Being nine points behind would have been psychologically difficult." And he insisted the win was deserved: "You can win through luck by defending deep, but we won entirely on merit."

There was also the expected complaint about the officials. Mourinho said there should have been "a clear red card for João on Diomande" around the hour mark.

The goalkeeper story

Andriy Lunin started because Thibaut Courtois had the flu. "The only thing I said to Lunin before the game was: you train to play, not to be on the bench," Mourinho said. "We have the best keeper in the world, but today we weren't crying before the game because Thibaut couldn't play." Captain Federico Valverde, Mourinho added, "played injured for over 40 minutes" before being replaced.
