Manchester City's £458m is a Premier League record for a single window, beating Liverpool's £415m from 2025. With Guardiola gone, Enzo Maresca was given three of the four most expensive midfielders on the market — and the early results have been perfect.

The three promoted clubs — Ipswich, Coventry and Hull — spent more than £400m between them, a sign of how much the newcomers are willing to gamble on staying up.

A window of Premier League-to-Premier League deals

About 38% of deals were between two Premier League clubs, up from 30% the year before. Seven of the nine deals in the table above moved a player from one English club to another. Tottenham's three biggest signings — Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savinho — all came from domestic rivals.

The deals that did not happen

  • Folarin Balogun turned down a move to Everton.
  • Lamine Camara stayed at Monaco after a reported £47m move to Chelsea collapsed.
  • Julián Álvarez stayed at Atlético Madrid despite interest from Barcelona and Arsenal.

Has the money worked?
