Bournemouth 3-0 AC Milan: the night the Cherries beat a seven-time European champion — plus Sunderland and Palace draw
Two penalties, a Mike Maignan red card and an Amine Adli free kick gave Bournemouth a historic 3-0 win over AC Milan and three wins from three in their first European campaign. Sunderland drew in Poland and Crystal Palace in Istanbul.

In their first season of European football, Bournemouth have just beaten one of the most famous clubs in the world. Marco Rose's side thrashed AC Milan 3-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Thursday night to make it three wins from three in the Europa League.
How Bournemouth beat Milan
| Minute | Event |
|---|---|
| 8' | Justin Kluivert scores a penalty after a VAR review for handball by Koni De Winter |
| 28' | Mike Maignan is sent off for pushing both hands into Tyler Adams' face at a corner |
| 32' | Marcus Tavernier scores the resulting penalty past substitute goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani |
| 84' | Amine Adli curls a free kick through the Milan wall |
The game turned in a four-minute spell before the half-hour. Maignan's straight red card — the first for a Milan goalkeeper in a major European game — meant Torriani came on cold to face a penalty, and Tavernier sent him the wrong way.
There was a neat piece of history in the first goal, too. Kluivert's penalty came 31 years after his father, Patrick, scored the winner for Ajax against Milan in the 1995 Champions League final.
What they said
Rose called his team's performance "brilliant" from start to finish and said he was proud of his players, but warned that the season is long. Milan coach Ruben Amorim said there was "no game after 20 minutes" once his side went down to ten men, calling it "a difficult night in every aspect".
What it means for Bournemouth
Nine points from three games puts Bournemouth third in the league phase table, and well placed for a top-eight finish that would take them straight into the round of 16. It also caps a remarkable week: last Saturday they won their first Premier League game of the season, 2-0 against Sunderland. They host Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday — see our Manchester United v Bournemouth preview.
Lech Poznań 1-1 Sunderland: still unbeaten
Tymur Tutierov scored after just 78 seconds — his first senior goal for Sunderland — heading in Nilson Angulo's cross after a poor pass out from Lech goalkeeper Mateusz Lis. Malick Fofana hit the post, but substitute Leo Bengtsson equalised from a corner in the 70th minute. The teams had 41 shots between them. Sunderland are unbeaten in Europe with seven points, a welcome contrast with their league form: they are bottom of the Premier League.
Beşiktaş 2-2 Crystal Palace
Palace came from behind in Istanbul and then let the lead slip:
- 45+1' Wilfred Ndidi gives Beşiktaş the lead.
- 51' Yeremy Pino equalises after VAR overturns an offside flag.
- 55' Jean-Philippe Mateta puts Palace ahead.
- 73' Substitute Junior Olaitan levels for Beşiktaş.
- 78' Beşiktaş's Ümit Akdağ is sent off for a two-footed lunge on Jørgen Strand Larsen, who later goes off injured.
The draw ended a two-game losing run for Pierre Sage's side, after defeat at Lyon in Europe and a 5-0 thrashing at Brighton in the league. Palace have four points from three games.
Celtic still pointless
Celtic lost 2-1 at home to Celta Vigo and have no points from three games, leaving them in danger of elimination.
