Carrick still Man United head coach after crisis talks end without a decision — what happens next
Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox met at Carrington on Monday, but Manchester United made no announcement and Michael Carrick is expected to take training on Tuesday. Eddie Howe is seen as the strongest candidate if United do make a change.

Twenty-four hours after the 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, Michael Carrick is still Manchester United's head coach. Monday's meetings ended without any announcement, and Carrick is expected to take training on Tuesday.
What happened on Monday
- The first-team squad had a day off, but chief executive Omar Berrada, director of football Jason Wilcox and head of recruitment Christopher Vivell were at Carrington to discuss the club's next steps.
- Carrick arrived shortly before 2pm, uninvited to the talks, and watched the Under-21s play Hull City behind closed doors.
- According to Sky Sports, Carrick and Wilcox did not hold talks. Wilcox left around 4.30pm and Carrick around 4.45pm.
"Carrick's future remains in huge doubt and there's no further clarity on whether he will continue or not," said Sky Sports' Danyal Khan.
Why is it taking so long?
Several reasons have been reported:
- Stock market rules. United are listed in New York and must follow US disclosure rules before a material announcement — see our earlier piece on why no announcement has been made.
- Ownership structure. Decisions involve the wider hierarchy, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family, who are in a different time zone and do not want to rush, according to journalist Andy Mitten.
- The replacement. Sky's Rob Dorsett said United's bosses "are taking their time to consider who they want as a replacement", and want any exit handled respectfully given supporters' backing for Carrick.
Carrick's record
Carrick was appointed in January 2026 and won 12 of 17 games to finish third last season, earning a contract to 2028. This season United have won only two of 12 games, are winless in eight and sit 16th, one point above the relegation zone. Read our Man United 0-3 Bournemouth report.
Who would replace him?
Journalist Laurie Whitwell says Eddie Howe has the strongest case, and that United would probably have to pay a few million pounds in compensation because of the terms of Howe's departure from his previous club. Julian Nagelsmann is also widely linked. None of this has been confirmed by United.
What's next
Training on Tuesday, then Chelsea away at the weekend. Whether Carrick takes that game is the big question. See the Premier League table.
