Champions League league phase explained: how the 36-team format works in 2026-27
How does the Champions League league phase work? 36 teams, eight games each, one table. Who goes straight to the round of 16, who goes to the play-offs, plus every key date for 2026-27.

The Champions League no longer has groups of four. Since 2024-25, all 36 clubs play in a single league phase, and the 2026-27 edition uses the same format. Here is how it works.
How the league phase works
- 36 teams, one table. Every club is ranked in a single league table.
- Eight games each. Each team plays eight different opponents — four at home and four away.
- Opponents come from four pots. Teams are seeded into four pots and face two opponents from each pot, so every club gets a mix of strong and weaker opponents.
- Points as usual. Three for a win, one for a draw.
What each position means
| Final position | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1st–8th | Qualify directly for the round of 16 |
| 9th–24th | Go into the two-legged knockout phase play-offs |
| 25th–36th | Eliminated from Europe for the season |
There is no longer a drop into the Europa League for teams that miss out — finishing 25th or lower ends a club's European season.
In the play-offs, the teams that finished 9th–16th are seeded and face the teams that finished 17th–24th, with the seeded side playing the second leg at home.
If teams finish level on points
Teams level on points are separated first by goal difference, then by goals scored, followed by further tiebreakers set out in UEFA's regulations.
