Everton 3-1 Newcastle: Garner, Hackney and Barry send Moyes' side to Fleetwood as Jaissle says 'being young is not an excuse any more'
Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 to complete the Carabao Cup quarter-final line-up and set up a trip to Arsenal-killers Fleetwood. Jack Grealish was left out for a disciplinary breach, and the same two teams meet again in the Premier League on Monday.

Everton are into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a 3-1 win over Newcastle at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday 29 October (early Friday Beijing time). Their reward is a trip to Fleetwood Town, the League Two side who knocked out Arsenal on Tuesday.
The goals
| Minute | Goal |
|---|---|
| 34' | James Garner 1-0 — Hayden Hackney plays him in after Amar Dedić loses the ball near the corner flag; Garner curls into the bottom corner |
| 45' | Hayden Hackney 2-0 — his first Everton goal, after a counter-attack that started with a Jordan Pickford save |
| 69' | Thierno Barry 3-0 — Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pulls the ball back after another fast break |
| 89' | Dan Burn 3-1 — a header for Newcastle's consolation |
How Everton won it
Everton were better on the break. All three of their goals came from quick attacks after Newcastle lost the ball, and Pickford played his part with an early save from Harvey Barnes. James Tarkowski also made a big last-ditch challenge to stop Will Osula just before the half-hour.
Newcastle felt they should have had a penalty just before half-time, when Barnes went down in the box, but the referee waved it away. Matthias Jaissle made three changes at half-time, bringing on Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Joelinton, but Everton scored again midway through the second half.
There was a scuffle after Burn's late goal involving Burn, Joelinton and Tarkowski, and bookings followed.
Grealish left out
Jack Grealish was not in the squad. David Moyes dropped him for a disciplinary breach; reports say he missed a training session earlier in the week. Everton did not need him, but it is a story to watch before Monday.
Jaissle: "Story of the season"
Newcastle's coach did not hide his frustration. He said the defeat reflected the "story of the season so far", adding: "We lack in the clinical approach to solve the situations." And on his young squad: "Being a young team is not an excuse any more."
