Two penalties, two goalkeepers
Both goals came from the spot. Rogers scored first for Chelsea after Gravenberch brought down Caicedo, and Cody Gakpo levelled before half-time after Fofana handled at a corner.
After that, the goalkeepers took over. Giorgi Mamardashvili made a fine one-handed save to deny Marco Palestra, and Penders, Chelsea's young keeper, kept out Araújo's close-range header and a shot from Barcola. Liverpool also needed last-ditch blocks in their own six-yard box, while Gomez cleared a Rogers shot inside the area.
The shootout
It went deep into sudden death. Both teams missed more than once: Tsimikas put his kick over the bar and Gravenberch was saved by Penders, while Mamardashvili saved one of Chelsea's kicks. In the end Joe Gomez scored, and Fofana, who had already given away the penalty for Liverpool's goal, sent the decisive kick high into the Kop.
Seven changes from Iraola
Andoni Iraola made seven changes from Sunday's win over Brighton, keeping only Araújo, Gakpo, Gravenberch and Van Dijk. Youngsters Trey Nyoni, James McConnell, Lewis Koumas and Rio Ngumoha all started.
He went to the bench in the second half: Florian Wirtz and Barcola came on after 58 minutes, and Alexander Isak and Alexis Mac Allister with eight minutes left. Wirtz playing will be a relief, after he came off against Brighton with an ankle problem.
