Five without a win and eight games in 30 days: Manchester United's pressure point

Michael Carrick's side sit 13th and head to Leeds on Sunday at the start of a punishing run. The numbers behind a difficult autumn.

Five without a win and eight games in 30 days: Manchester United's pressure point

Manchester United started the season with flashes of promise. Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick in a 5–2 win over Ipswich in August, and United opened their Champions League campaign with a 4–0 win over Sabah. Six weeks later, the mood is very different.

The slide

United are winless in five games in all competitions. In the league they have six points from six matches and sit 13th, having scored only nine goals. The Manchester derby at Old Trafford in September — watched by a crowd of 74,161 — ended in a 1–0 defeat to City.

In midweek, Atlético Madrid scored inside the first minute through Barrios and added a second from Lookman late on to win 2–0 in Madrid, leaving United with three points from two Champions League games.

The schedule

The next month offers little time to regroup. United play eight matches in 30 days, starting with Sunday's trip to Leeds United, who are seventh — three points and six places above them. Leeds won 2–1 at Old Trafford in April, and a repeat would leave United six points behind their rivals.

What needs to change

The issue is less about defence than chance creation. Nine league goals in six games is a modest return for a squad with this much attacking talent, and finding a reliable source of goals beyond Fernandes looks like the priority.

With a congested calendar ahead, Carrick's rotation choices will matter as much as his tactics. A positive result at Elland Road would ease the pressure immediately; another defeat would make the next 30 days feel even longer.
