The 2026 final: Spain's second star
The first 48-team World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, ended on Sunday 19 July 2026. The final was goalless after 90 minutes. Argentina's Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card, and Ferran Torres won it in the 106th minute. Read our report on the 2026 final.
For Argentina, the defending champions, it was a fourth lost final.
Brazil: five stars
Brazil are the only country to have played at every World Cup and remain the most successful. Their five titles span 44 years, from a 17-year-old Pelé in Sweden in 1958 to Ronaldo's two goals in the 2002 final against Germany. But they have not won since: 24 years, matching the gap between their 1970 and 1994 titles.
Europe against South America
| Continent | Titles |
|---|---|
| Europe | 13 (Germany 4, Italy 4, France 2, Spain 2, England 1) |
| South America | 10 (Brazil 5, Argentina 3, Uruguay 2) |
No country from Africa, Asia, North America or Oceania has won the tournament. Morocco's semi-final in 2022 is the furthest an African side has gone.

The next World Cup
