Friday night football: Forest held at Ipswich after VAR row, Gladbach end their losing streak, Nice stun Brest

Five of Europe's top leagues got their weekends under way on Friday night. Here is everything that happened.

Ipswich 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Goals: Neco Williams 13' (Forest); Julio Enciso 41' (Ipswich)

Forest dominated much of the game at Portman Road but left with only a point. Williams finished first time at the far post after Liam Delap held the ball up and Morgan Gibbs-White sent Daniel Muñoz away down the right. Ipswich equalised four minutes before half-time when Dara O'Shea's long ball was poorly dealt with by Xaver Schlager and Nikola Milenković, and Enciso raced through to score his first Premier League goal since May 2025.

Leif Davis was Ipswich's hero, clearing off the line twice — from Gibbs-White in the 31st minute and Dan Ndoye in the 64th.

The VAR row: early in the second half, Issa Diop brought down James McAtee. Referee Thomas Bramall was sent to the monitor to check for a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity, but gave only a yellow, judging that McAtee was moving away from goal.

"It was the wrong decision, but we couldn't have played a more dominant second half," said Forest coach Oliver Glasner, though he added that he liked that the referee went to the screen.

Bundesliga: Stuttgart 2-3 Gladbach

Goals: Demirović 5', 83' (Stuttgart); Scally 38', Machino 51', Mohya 66' (Gladbach)

Borussia Mönchengladbach picked up their first points of the season, and avoided becoming the first team in Bundesliga history to lose their first seven league games. Ermedin Demirović put Stuttgart ahead early, but Joe Scally, Shuto Machino and man of the match Wael Mohya turned it around. Demirović's late second was not enough. Stuttgart, who made six changes after their midweek draw with Atlético Madrid, have lost four of their first seven.

Serie A: Torino 3-2 Monza

Goals: Fitz-Jim 39', Belghali 61', Vlašić 72' (Torino); Varela 47', Patterson own goal 90+4' (Monza)

Torino made it two Serie A wins in a row and spoiled Ivan Jurić's return to the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino with Monza. Rafik Belghali's curling strike and Nikola Vlašić's finish from the edge of the box did the damage.

Ligue 1: Brest 1-2 Nice

Goals: Ajorque 15' (Brest); Wahi 61', Diop 83' (Nice)

Nice came from behind for their first away points of the season. Ludovic Ajorque headed Brest in front, but Elye Wahi equalised and Sofiane Diop won it late. Nice move on to 11 points.

LaLiga: Alavés 1-1 Málaga

Goals: Niño 44' (Málaga); Mañas 89' (Alavés)

Málaga were a minute away from their first win of the season when Aitor Mañas followed up a rebound to equalise. Málaga have now gone ten LaLiga games without a win and remain bottom; Alavés are without a win in six.
