Bayern 6-1 Magdeburg: Olise scores twice with a Panenka as Kane watches from the bench and Danks leads again

Bayern Munich are into the DFB-Pokal last 16 after a 6-1 win over 2. Bundesliga side Magdeburg at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday 28 October. Assistant Aaron Danks was in charge again with Vincent Kompany still away through illness, and new Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane did not get off the bench.

Minute Goal
10' Michael Olise 1-0 — taps in from Ismael Saibari's through ball
~15' Felipe Chávez 1-1 — cuts inside and finds the top corner for Magdeburg
21' Ismael Saibari 2-1 — set up by Olise
50' Olise 3-1 (pen) — a Panenka after Alphonso Davies is fouled

90+3' David Santos Daiber 6-1 — a goal on his debut with the last kick

A brief wobble, then control

Magdeburg, fifth in the second division and in good form after a 6-1 win over Karlsruher SC, were level within five minutes of Olise's opener. Chávez finished into the top corner, and Atik later hit the woodwork for the visitors near half-time.

But Bayern were far more dangerous. They had 19 shots and an expected-goals figure of 3.98, against Magdeburg's nine attempts and 0.86 xG. Jonas Urbig also made an important save from Chávez's follow-up.

Olise's big night — and the celebration

Olise scored twice and set up Saibari before being replaced by Sacha Boey on 67 minutes. His 12 competitive goals this season are more than any other Bundesliga player has scored.

His second goal came with a cheeky Panenka penalty, and his celebration caused some confusion. Instead of his usual celebration, he ran to the corner flag, crossed himself and pointed at the Bayern bench. Kane smiled and wagged his finger back at him. Neither player explained it, but it came at the end of a week in which Kane won the Ballon d'Or and Olise finished ninth — see Kane wins the Ballon d'Or and the full rankings.

Why Kane didn't play

Kane stayed on the bench for the whole game. Bayern did not give an injury reason: he had played a demanding run of games against Arsenal and Freiburg, and the team did not need him. For more on his season, see Kane: what next?

Kompany update

Kompany collapsed while watching training last Friday and was taken to hospital. According to Goal, he has since left hospital, and a diagnosis has been made, though the club have not said publicly what it is. Danks has now led the team in the win at Freiburg and against Magdeburg — see Kompany's health update and Freiburg 1-3 Bayern.
